Dr. David J Breen MBBS MRCP FRCR
David Breen MBBS MRCP FRCR is a Consultant Radiologist specialising in Interventional Oncology at the University Hospital Southampton. He has trained in London, Oxford and Vancouver where he developed a special interest in image guided ablation of small volume cancers. He is now acknowledged as a pioneer in the development and application of both Cryoablation and Microwave ablation.
In Vancouver in 1995 he first started operative and research work in cancer ablation. This pionering work was brought back to Europe and put into clinical practice. He has been at Southampton since 2001.
He is Vice Chairman of NHS England's Interventional Radiology (IR) clinical reference group and Specialist Advisor to NICE (strictly now NIHCE) looking at new cancer interventions. He is the UK representative for the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) and Liaison Officer to the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (BSGAR).
He lectures across the world at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE), North America (WCIO) and Australasia (IRSA) on image-guided cancer ablation techniques. He trains other professionals and helps develop services across Europe.
He has the largest single operator case series of Kidney Cryoablation that is published in the world. His work demonstrates comparable outcomes to laparoscopic surgery but with faster return to normality for patients and better preservation of normal kidney tissue. In Southampton ablation is now the first choice for kidney cancer (many more kidney cancer patients have ablation rather than laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery). He also has established a leading practice in Liver Microwave ablation through the use of state of the art software that improves outcomes. He publishes on Kidney, Liver and adrenal gland ablation.
